Ulavacharu is a thick lentil soup made with horse gram, spices and herbs. In Telugu, Horse gram is known as ulava and Rasam as charu. So ulavacharu is simply horse gram rasam made in the traditional Andhra style. With a punch of Tamarind taste.
This Andhra’s favorite dish is a soup made with horse gram.One of the traditional Andhra cuisines and is quite famous in Guntur and Krishna districts.Fresh cream is added to it to enchance the taste and one of the dishes that everyone should try.

Ulava Charu

Ingredients:
Horsegram - 1 cup
Tamarind juice - 1/2 cup
Cumin seeds - 1 tsp
Mustard seeds - 1 tsp
Curry leaves - 1 string
Dried red chili - 3
Turmeric powder - 1 tsp
Salt- as per taste
Groundnut oil - 1 tsp
Instructions:
Wash and soak horsegram over night
In a pressure cooker, cook horsegram for 10 whistle, Once the steam is low, strain horsegram, collect horsegram cooked water in a bowl and keep aside
In a pan add groundnut oil, mustard seeds, cumin seeds, curry leaves and dried red chili and let them crackle
Now ad horsegram broth into it and boil for 10 minutes
Add turmeric powder and salt as per taste
Add tamarin juice to the broth and boil well until it reduce into half
Serve hot with hot rice
