Urad Dal is called split black lentils in English. It can be with the skin (black urad dal) or without the skin (white urad dal).
This lentil is made for everyday meals in India and every house has a different way of making it.
LETS GET COOKING:
Urad Dal ki Dal

Ingredients:
Black Urad dal- 1 cup
Onion - 1
Green chili paste - 1 tsp
Ginger-garlic paste - 1 tsp
Coriander seed powder - 1 tsp
Cumin seed powder - 1 tsp
Turmeric powder - 1 tsp
Salt - as per taste
Oil - 1 tsp
Water - 1 cup
Instructions:
Wash and soak black urad dal for 3 hours
Strain the soaked water, add into pan with green chili paste, ginger-garlic paste, coriander seeds powder, cumin powder and salt as per taste with required water. Cover and boil until its cooked
In other pan, add oil, chopped onion, sauté , then add cooked masala black urad dal with cooked water
Cover and cook for 5 minutes
Serve hot with rice or chapati
